The Centurion Transpirator II - THE CONCEPT
Many common respiratory problems are associated with or aggravated by airway water loss. Traditional therapy for this type of condition includes humidification. We have perfected the method of airway humidification for horses. We named this device the Centurion Transpirator II System and to date we have treated thousands of horses worldwide.

The Transpirator System functions by delivering pure water vapour, at a precisely controlled temperature, into the entire respiratory tract. It does not provide little water droplets, which can only reach the upper areas, but air, saturated to 100% humidity, which penetrates into the deepest and smallest airways.

Our system was developed from human medical equipment, which has been tested for over nine years in clinical studies on both adults and children with respiratory disease.

Unlike many products designed for the equine market, only after thoroughly testing various prototypes and design variations did we begin to market our system in April 1986.

The Transpirator II System is quality constructed to the highest medical standards. Engineered to withstand the rigors of the racetrack environment, but completely portable, our system is easy to operate, efficient and safe to use on all horses.

Transpirator II therapy has demonstrated improvement on both Standard-bred and Thoroughbred horses in those cases where obstructive respiratory conditions or airway water loss contributed to decreased performance levels.

Transpirator II therapy may also be beneficial to the general health of horses who are exposed to dust, allergens and air pollutants in the everyday barn environment.

In cases of common respiratory ailments such as bronchitis, viruses and colds, regular Transpirator II therapy may help shorten the normally expected recovery time, allowing many horses to get back to training and racing sooner.

RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS AND RACING PERFORMANCE
Respiratory disease is second only to musculoskeletal problems in limiting a racehorse's ability to perform.

Improving a horse's pulmonary function by removing airway obstructions reduces the work of breathing and improves oxygenation; two major factors in allowing the equine athlete to perform to its full potential.

Improving mucocilliary clearance can lead to shorter recovery times for horses with respiratory complications, getting the animal back on the track faster for training and racing.

In our study, each of the 19 trainers involved were asked to rate their horses' racing performance after Transpirator system treatments: 65% of the races were rated as improved. Many trainers commented that the horses' recovery time after a race was markedly improved; less blowing and back to feed and water in a shorter period of time. At least 9 of the 33 horses turned in the best performances of their careers.

BEFORE AND AFTER TRANSPIRATOR SYSTEM TREATMENTS

3 Races before Transpirator System Treatment:

Races after Transpirator System Treatment:
Starts Win Place Show
93 13 17 9
  14% 18% 10% TOTAL 42%

As you can see from the above chart, the win ratio for these 33 horses increased from 10 to 14% after Transpirator System treatment. The win, place and show average increased from 28% to a very respectable 42% after treatment.

Since the Transpirator System has been in general use in the field, many trainers have reported dramatic improvements in their horse’s performances.

This being the case in horses that had previously suffered from respiratory disorders which were believed by the trainers to have impaired their performance.

POWERFUL, PORTABLE, SAFE AND EASY TO USE
Compact enough and light enough to be completely portable, the entire system fits easily into a car. Safety has been engineered into the design of our unit's electronic and mechanical components, which are contained and protected within a tough, rigid shell.

The Centurion Equine Transpirator System is simple to operate. Built-in fail-safe features prevent the delivery of vapour above the optimum temperature. The unit automatically turns itself off in the case of any malfunction or loss of water supply.

The Transpirator unit is a powerful and completely safe medical quality device, which provides over 300 litres per minute of soothing water vapour.

NOT A NEBULIZER
The Transpirator System is not a nebulizer. Nebulizers are designed to break down water and medications into small air-born droplets for treatment of the upper airways. The upper airways remove airborne particles, including nebulized water droplets, to protect the small lower airways and alveoli in the lung. As a result, nebulized water is of little or no value in treating respiratory disease of the lungs.

The Transpirator System, in contrast, warms, humidifies, and preconditions the horse's entire inhalation with droplet-free water vapour. This heated humidity can penetrate the lungs all the way to the bronchioles and alveoli. It is in the small airways that obstructions are most prevalent. The resulting hydration and removal of airway of obstruction helps the respiratory system function at peak efficiency.

USE IN CASES OF EIPH
Our studies with known bleeders seem to indicate that consistent treatment with the Transpirator system may be a valuable adjunct therapy for horses suffering from exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage.

As shown in the chart below, bronchoscopic examinations of 33 known bleeders treated with Transpirator therapy revealed that bleeding had been eliminated or substantially reduced.

A recent article in a veterinary textbook cited Transpirator therapy as possibly being effective in horses with EIPH through improved clearance of airway obstructions or a reduction in airway reactivity.

FOR GENERAL RESPIRATORY HEALTH
Backstretch environments are dusty. Air quality is quite poor, filled with pollutants, allergens and airborne infectious agents.

Transpirator therapy enhances the natural cleansing action in the horse's respiratory system. Your horse feels better and breathes easier. A healthy, well-hydrated upper respiratory tract is the first line of defence against respiratory disease.

From the common cold in racehorses to foal pneumonia on breeding farms, the Transpirator System eases distress during the course of the illness and in many cases shortens recovery time.

ESPECIALLY BENEFICIAL FOR COLD WEATHER RACING
Cold air carries less water vapour than warm air. Cold weather exercise does more than chill the airways. It takes away moisture with every breath. Transpirator therapy warms the airways gently and eliminates airway water loss. By thinning the mucous blanket and hydrating the respiratory system, Transpirator therapy may also contribute to improved oxygen exchange.

Poor oxygen exchange, congestion and excessive dryness of the reparatory system may be contributing factors to a decline in performance during cold weather.

TREATS MANY HORSES ... SAFELY
The recommended treatment time is from one to two hours. Since most horses relax and doze during treatment, personnel are not distracted from the daily routine. Ideally, the system should be in use throughout the working day, moving from horse to, horse as required.

The sterilant supplied with each Transpirator II system is used to disinfect the unit. This powerful, broad spectrum antiseptic kills a wide array of microorganisms on contact. Properly disinfected masks are far less likely to spread infection than the water buckets you are using right now!
